Key West Deep Sea Fishing Conditions
Anglers are having outstanding results so far for June. South East winds have been in the 15 to 20 mph range since the end of May, which produces the roughened waters prime for catching trophy-sized fish. Bait fish are plentiful, which not only pleases anglers, but also completes the local frigate bird diet. Deep sea fishing is only predicted to improve as the month progresses and the moon becomes full. The perfect water and weather conditions are expected to continue.
Late June Latest Angling Reports
Tarpon-Crabs, pin fish and slow moving dark lures have attracted these migrating fish in the area. Although it seems that they are more likely to bite in the back country. While migratory schools frequent area waters for most of the summer, there are many that remain local all year long, as the fish are attracted to the 70 degree waters. While many have averaged 80 pounds in weight, one lucky angler recently snagged a 180 pounder.
Mahi Mahi-Anglers have enjoyed hauling in these fish in sizes ranging from 20 to 50 pounds anywhere from the docks to waters in depths of up to 1,000 feet. Mahi are plentiful at this time.
Tuna-Larger blackfin are biting while trolling in deep water and football sized are being caught around the Humps. Bluefins have been found in 10 to 12 foot waters. At depths of 1,500 to 3,000 feet, anglers successfully wrangled fish in the 300 to 500 pound range.
There is plenty of catch and release Blue and White Marlin, along with large Wahoo obtained while trolling. Snowy and yellow edge grouper, 12-pound mutton snappers, large barracuda and a small shark have also been reported. All of the fish have been caught using live bait, on one of our Key West Top Guides.
