Key West Catch of the Week - September 1, 2014
This summer in Key West has been one of the best in years, in regards to fishing. Throughout these summer months, there have been a myriad of jaw-dropping catches even we found hard to believe. This past week has been no different, as Key West played host to a variety of spectacular catches during our charters. Chief among these was an amazing 85 lb. Mahi Mahi, which was caught by Steven, who traveled all the way to Key West from Charleston, South Carolina. This excellent haul was more than worthy to win our Catch of the Week award for this week.
When we initially got wind of this surprising catch, one of the first things we noticed was how similar Steven looked to the American novelist Ernest Hemingway, who himself spent much of his time in the balmy Key West. In fact, it's exceedingly possible that Steven could win a Hemingway look-a-like contest if he were to enter. Steven's catch of an 85 pound Mahi Mahi is of particular note due to the fact it is somewhat rare for this species of fish to exceed 60 pounds. Mahi Mahi, as their name entails, is a particularly strong and fast fish that is quite stubborn once hooked, making Steven's catch all the more impressive. This fish is primarily identifiable due to its rounded and peculiar face, as well as the stunning blue, green and yellow colors that line its body, though these colors do fade a bit after death. These fish are also highly sought after for their tasty meat, which is eaten throughout the world.
The Mahi Mahi fish lives and thrives in waters of around 80-85 degrees, with sunny and calm weather conditions, which is likely why this fish was found in the area, as the recent weather has been quite pleasant here in Key West. Though it may not be evident, weather is extremely useful for fishing, as the perfect fishing conditions can provide a bigger haul than you might have imagined. In fact, most weather conditions have some benefits for anglers, while ample amounts of sunshine with occasional light rain make for some amazing Key West deep sea fishing. Anglers specifically looking to fish for Mahi Mahi often offer Ballyhoo or even sardines as bait to attract this particular species of fish, mainly choosing to look for them amidst wood and other debris while deep sea fishing.
If you're looking to enjoy some Key West deep sea fishing and maybe even attempt to snag a Mahi Mahi or 2 yourself, we offer a large number of charters to satisfy any taste. In fact, our experienced captains will ensure that you are taken to the best spots that will allow you to fully maximize your fishing potential. It's even possible that you will bring in such an exemplary catch that your photo will end up as our next Catch of the Week. Congratulations to Steven for keeping his cool and reeling in a massive 85 pound Key West Mahi Mahi!
