Fishing Behind Shrimp Boats In April

In the weeks ahead, we look forward to more trips to the north to follow the shrimp boats as they attract plentiful Blackfin Tuna. We've already had some nice success this week in the Gulf of Mexico by chumming and using cut shrimp boat trash. We typically make a trade with the shrimp boat crew: a case of beer for the superfluous aquatic species that may be caught along with the shrimp. The Tuna, as well as other fish species, hungrily trail behind these shrimp boats, awaiting the shrimp crew to dump the unwanted catch.

Our captains will also be heading south of Key West Harbor into the deeper water (from one hundred and seventy five to two hundred and ninety feet deep) for some bottom fishing. The ledges and hard bottom offshore are excellent spots to catch American Red Snapper and Mutton Snapper this time of year. We also expect to hook plenty of Grouper once its season re-opens on the First of May.

Tight lines and trophy trips,

Capt. Chris Garcia
