Key West Fishing Reports

Fishing Report - May 25th 2010

The angling has been hot for a number of excellent game fish near Key West. The Sailfish and Mahi Mahi have been heading out to the deepwater (between depths of seven hundred and eleven hundred feet) but are still biting well.  These pelagic species move off the reef as the water temperature rises.

The Tarpon angling in Key West Harbor has continued to be great. Our charters have been scoring an average of five of these fighting fish on cut shrimper bycatch on every half day outing.

Recently, the Snapper have been spawning off Key West.� On the reef in around seventy-five feet of water, our charter groups have been nabbing their limit of Yellowtail Snapper. They've been snagging three to four pound fish on cut Bonita and minnows on spinning rods. This is the ideal time to haul in the large flags. “Flags” is used by local fishermen to describe the large male Yellowtails because their yellow fins can be seen above the surface of the water as the fish are reeled in. We have also been heading out in late afternoon to fish for Mutton Snapper until around nine o'clock in the evening.
