Key West Fishing Reports

Fishing Report - May 18th 2010

On the Coolcast, I ventured out to the Wall for some deep sea angling on Tuesday. The Wall is a sheer undersea precipice where the depth drops from 1000 feet to an astonishing 2000 feet. We often head out to this region, located 25 miles from Key West, for some offshore fishing during the summer season. I found a huge log drifting in this area, so we trolled underneath this log with ballyhoo, snagging 20 Dorado (also known as Mahi Mahi). The largest Dorado weighed 40 pounds. I also used a downrigger to catch 3 Wahoos, who are often found under debris.

This is an excellent time of year to join us for some Snapper fishing out at the reef. Both Mutton Snapper and Yellowtail Snapper inundate the reef for their annual spawn during the months of May and June. The best time to catch these game fish is during the light of the full moon after dark, but these species are active throughout the next few months. Mutton Snapper bite well on live Threadfins, while the Yellowtail Snapper hit minnows or cut bait.
