Key West Fishing Reports

Fishing Report - May 7th 2010

With sunny skies, and calm seas, the fishing in the Florida Keys has been outstanding this week. Instead of catching 10 to 15 pound Dorado (Mahi), we've been hooking 40 to 50 pounders this week, marking the true start of the Dorado migration past the Keys. Sailfish season is also still at its peak; our own Dan Smith skippered the Outcast to the south of Key West today to see his anglers catch three Sailfish.

I guided a charter to the north of Key West to catch some Permit near a thirty-five-foot wreck. Because this is spawning season, Permit is especially active near shallow reefs and wrecks this time of year. My group on the Coolcast drew three to the surface utilizing fly tackle. In addition to landing those three fish, the group caught three more on light tackle spinning rods with green crab bait.

The weather conditions will be superb for angling this week, so be sure to book an inshore excursion to fish for Permit or Tarpon, or a deep sea trip to chase down Sailfish or Dorado. I'll be piloting the Coolcast north to follow the shrimp trawlers and cast for Blackfins with spinning rods.
