Fishing Report - May 4th 2010

On the Coolcast today, I guided two fruitful fishing charters to the deep waters south of the Florida Keys. This morning, we headed to the color change where the Gulf Stream meets more static waters at a depth of approximately 225 feet. When the Gulf Stream nears the island chain, it brings some great deep sea species along with it, including Sailfish and Dorado.  Right now, the seasons for both species have peaked. Sailfish should continue to migrate past the Keys for another month or so while the Dorado (also known as Mahi Mahi or Dolphin) are just beginning their migration. The anglers on this charter caught both Kingfish and Sailfish on live Threadfins. They also caught two nice Dorado while we were trolling under a spot where I saw a Frigate Bird diving. Using ballyhoo, the party caught a twenty-seven lb bull as well as a twenty-two lb cow.

On the afternoon trip, I piloted the Coolcast out to deep-water wrecks for some vertical jigging. My clients pulled up some Amberjack, Mutton Snapper, as well as a twenty-eight lb Black Grouper. Tomorrow, I'm guiding a group into the Gulf to hook some Permit at more wrecks.
