Key West Fishing Reports

Fishing Report - March 5th 2010

The murky conditions around the reef south of Key West have been great for our charters lately, drawing a score of hungry sharks, including a ton of Blacktips and even the occasional Hammerhead. On our charter boat the Outcast, Captain Bill Wallace had one of his anglers hook a five hundred pound Mako. Bill actually spotted this enormous predator in chum slick and quickly set up a larger rod with appropriate tackle, and before long, he was on the line of a happy client.

There was a promising eastbound current off the reef at approximately two hundred and twenty feet. Our own Captain Tony Miller of the Coolwater fished along the color change and saw some great success fishing for Blackfin Tuna and Sailfish. The Blackfins were especially active in the area on Friday.

It may be a little unseasonably chilly for anglers recently in the Keys, but the fish don't seem affected. Temperatures in the area are expected to climb into the seventies on Sunday and Monday, bringing spring. This rise in temps should bring the first signs of Tarpon to Key West Harbor.
