Key West Fishing Reports

Fishing Report - February 2nd 2010

As I wrote on last Friday, King Mackerel fishing on the Gulf side to the north of Key West was great over the weekend. Since the winds were blowing out of the south, our captains headed north to chase King Mackerel using live Blue Runners. Our Captain of the Coolwater, Tony, also led a client to an exciting catch: a two-hundred and twenty-five pound Hammerhead Shark. These apex predators really battle once hooked.

After an unusual day of rain this Monday, the winds calmed down to about ten knots, blowing gently out of the north. Today, our boats headed south to the Atlantic side of Key West to chase some sportfish. It was a fine day for Sailfish; two of our captains (Damien of the Coolcast and Bill of the Outcast) reported hooking some Sailfish on Tuesday. Captain Bill's angler requested to catch a Sailfish - boy did Bill come through for him -- guiding him to hook a 7.5 foot Sailfish on 20-pound spin in 160 feet of water. This was the first Sailfish this veteran client had ever caught in his life. Looking forward to this upcoming Thursday, the winds are projected to be coming out of the east at fifteen knots; great conditions for chasing more Sailfish to the south of the Keys.

Tight lines and trophy trips,

Capt. Chris Garcia
